The Seventh Seal, directed by the Swedish master Ingmar Bergman, is a classic European film. The film was one
of Ingmar Bergman’s most accessible and popular movies, and was the beginning of his long career as Sweden’s most influential and artistic auteur. Ingmar Bergman, along with Jean-Luc Godard, Federico Fellini, and Akira Kurasowa, represented the classic European film directors of the 1960s.

These types of artistically minded European films are not as popular today and often only studied in film classes. However, The Seventh Seal has lost none of the magic that it had when it first came out. It has aged well. The crisp, clear, black and white cinematography is so sharp that it becomes almost translucent.

The film follows the story of a knight, played by Max Von Sydow, as he is traveling across the land after the Crusades. There are adventures, religious and political motifs, and stunning imagery and symbolism throughout the film. However, The Seventh Seal is about death, and the character of death shows up throughout the film. In fact, death plays a game of chess with the knight throughout the film. This was and continues to be the most memorable part of the film.

No Country for Old Men is a film directed by the Coen brothers and based on the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name. The movie came out in 2007 and quickly became a favorite of many film critics. With a cast of Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin, No Country for Old Men is well acted and good old fashion entertainment.

The movie is set in the early 1980′s and is centered on a drug deal gone bad. Josh Brolin’s character wonders upon drug money one night and decides to keep it. Tommy Lee Jones is a retiring sheriff who is forced to find Brolin’s character before something bad happens to him. Then there is Javier Bardem’s character, the most frigtening serial killer in film since Hannibal Lector, hired to track down the money. The three men journey through Texas, crossing paths many times before their final fatal meeting.

Like many of the Coen brother’s films, No Country for Old Men looks at the fate of man. Many believe that No Country is one of the best Coen brother films of all time. The film was the winner of many awards receiving three British Academy Awards, two Golden Globes and four American Academy Awards. These awards included Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Javier Bardem. The awards were well deserved and the film is one of their best.

Up is an incredible movie and is an intensely high quality featured film. The film makers of Up made the movie come to life from beginning to end. The creative brainpower behind the movie is amazing. It is a story that ignites your emotions in many different ways. It gives a lot of laughs, surprises and some feelings of sadness. That’s what makes the movie so very interesting.
The music was a perfect fit for each and every scene. I especially like the piano playing. Up is a very good family movie that can be enjoyed by all ages. Cgi movies has always been fantastic and exciting. Movies like The
Incredibles,Cars,Toy Story,Finding Nemo,Monster’s Inc,WALL-E,Ratatouille, and A Bug’s Life are all extraordinary movies. They are movies that are actioned packed with a touch of humor in them. I wouldn’t call these film cartoons, for they are far more then that. I view them as real people films that are animated. I have great anticipation of years to come to watch other up coming animated movies like Brave,Monster University and Toy Story 4. These along with many other cgi films will be a great addition to my collection of animated movies.

We’ve put together some reviews of the films we see airing most often for your viewing pleasure
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps – Grade: B- We wanted to give this film a glowing review, we really did, but it just didn’t live up to all the hype. Shia Lebouf makes a great protg but the whole thing seemed stilted and dated.
Salt – Grade A- If you like action films with a twist, this one’s for you. We weren’t expecting much from Angelina Jolie here but she really came through in a way we admired. She’s got the acting chops and the plot here is more interesting than it needed to be so kudos, Salt.
Hanna – Grade C – We hoped this Liam Nieson thriller would live up to “Taken” but it just didn’t. It was a weird mix of action and disturbing as the star was a young girl trained tokill people, and we just couldn’t get into it.

To call anything Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece shows a deeper appreciation for the work of this foul-mouthed film maker than the author has. A person who is looking for the film maker’s best work should not even consider Inglorious Bastards. While Inglorious Basterds is more of an actual Pulp Fiction piece than Tarantiono’s other film of the same name, it still does not qualify as fine cinema. The film maker does not really have any movie that can be considered to be a master piece. Much like Martin Scorsese, Tarantino confuses vulgarity with heroism. While there are good points to both movies, neither one deserves to be remembered in the annals of film history.

This statement may disappoint fans of Pulp Fiction, but if they enjoy the movie and enjoy Tarantion’s work they will enjoy Inglorious Bastards. There is more keeping this film from being a masterpiece besides the person who made it. The most important one is that the film is a remake of a foreign film and has just as many comedic elements as the original. This time the jokes are tailored to American audiences. The movie if nothing else, is simply entertaining to watch. With many movie makers, that is all the viewer can ask for from them.

In the summer of 2008, the Hangover took over the movie industry. The film put many new stars on the map and when the idea of a sequel was thrown around, critics and fans went into a frenzy. With all of the main characters returning like Bradley Cooper, Ken Jeong, Ed Helms, Zak Galifinakis and Justin Bartha, most people assumed that the movie would indeed be another revelation. Well that is not quite how it panned out for director Todd Phillips. Most critics and fans agree that the sequel was not near the same level as the Hangover original.Didn’t catch that? This explains it.

The sequel is darker and raunchier to most people who have seen the film. A film critics worst nightmare is a film that is predictable and that is just what the Hangover Part II suffers of. The movie was so close to the original that the only difference between the sequel and the original is the location. It does have its bright spots however and many fans will agree on this. But when it comes to asking whether or not the film is as good as the original, that is a simple question. No, the movie is not as good as the first one.

This years movie releases have been littered with sequels and remakes. Many of these were highly anticipate, from robots to pirates, and super heroes to little blue men. Many of these movies racked in loads of cash with promises of living up to their originals.

Transformers 3 had so much potential, with a great director in Bay, a great actor, in LaBeouf, and a gorgeous actress in Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. The problem is this movie was just bad. From its confusing plot, to its poorly written script. It was definitely less than meets the eye. Green Lantern starring Ryan Renolds had my attention from the moment I found out about its release. Then, after watching I felt betrayed. This movie came no where close to its counter part comic book. With dialogue that sounds like a 60s cheese flick and a lead actor who couldn’t fill his role they way it needed. Green Lantern was a true disappointment to the super hero genre. Finally, we move to the world of Jack Sparrow. While none of the Pirate of the Caribbean movies were close to amazing, this one fell short of even those. It seems that Jack Sparrow has out lived his excitement. With a dull story-line and a movie that seemed to be reaching for one last gasp of air, this seems to be the end of our swash buckling friends. With a lot of disappointment this year, let’s hope the rest of the year will bring us some movie greatness.

Every year many movies get completely over looked by the blockbuster top sellers and are completely forgotten about by the public. Here is two underrated movies to look out for this year.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

A beautifully filmed movie, based on the book of the same name, about friendship and hope. It goes through a story of friendship in modern day China complicated by demanding careers, relationships, and life, but when they find the connection to their ancestral past and the story of a friendship from 19th-century china they realize how important their friendship truly is. It will be in limited release in theaters this year, but definitely a movie to look out for.

A Little Help

A dramatic comedy about a woman (Jenna Fischer) who’s life in essence is falling apart, and in order to take care of herself and her 12 year old son she finds herself getting wrapped up in a series of very bizarre lies. It takes a refreshing comedic look on a usually dramatic scenario making for an interesting yet moving movie. It’s not really made it into the public eye yet being an impendent film, but it’s well worth the watch.
